Bailey's 1st Grade Students Learn Executive Functioning Skill and Self-Regulation Through Take Home Games
Each week, 1st graders from several classes at Bailey's have the opportunity to check out games, take them home, and play with their families for the week.
Research from Harvard Center on the Developing Child inspired several teachers to implement take home games in their classrooms.
Why games?
- Games develop executive function and self-regulation skills
- Games allow students to apply these skills in a different setting.
- Take home games increase student accountability. Students who take home games agree to take responsibility for game materials and return them to the classroom.
Things for families to consider:
- As your child becomes familiar with a game, give them more ownership and responsibility by letting them enforce rules of game play.
- Ensure your child is challenged by choosing age appropriate games. (see research from Harvard Center on the Developing Child)
