2nd Grade Migratory Bird PBL Unit

2nd graders from Sra. Obando's class engaged in a Project Based Learning (PBL) unit on migratory birds and had the opportunity to share their process at a Bailey's PTA meeting.

Description of Migratory Bird PBL

Driving Question: How can you, as 2nd grade environmental activists, create global awareness to protect migratory birds?

Entry Event: Mrs. Deinlein, an ornithologist from the National Zoo, asked second graders to help create global awareness to protect migratory birds. See entry event HERE

Process:

  • Students learned about the role of ornithologists and the tools they use.
  • Students researched why birds migrate and the dangers they face during migration.
  • Students were visited by an ornithologist from the Smithsonian National Zoo.
  • As environmental activists, students brainstormed ways they could inform others and create awareness about migratory birds and the problems they face once arriving in Nicaragua. Students communicated their ideas by creating and sharing a Tableau (frozen picture created with their bodies).
  • Students created posters and postcards with phrases to capture Nicaraguan students attention and create awareness of the problem migratory birds are facing.
  • Families donated canvas pencil cases, markers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, and pencils for students to create pencil cases with messages about how to protect migratory birds.
