Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

As Staff Appreciation Week comes to an end, we would like to extend a special thank you to our amazing PTA for providing a delicious breakfast and lunch for us this week. Their generosity and thoughtfulness truly helped to make this week extra special for all of us.

In addition to the wonderful treats, I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. Our first-grade chicks have been hatching, filling our school with joy and wonder.  Students were able to watch a livestream throughout the day to observe the chicks as they hatched.  It's moments like these that remind us of the magic of learning and the beauty of nature.

We also want to express our gratitude to the parents who joined us for Ms. Spiess-Ki’s music informances. Your support and encouragement mean the world to our students, and it was truly heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces as they shared their musical knowledge with you.

Finally, we are sending a huge thank you to all the parents who took the time to join us for lunch this week. Your presence not only was the highlight of your child’s day but it also strengthened the bonds between home and school, which are so essential to our students' success.

We hope you have a marvelous Mother’s Day weekend!  As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!

Warm regards,

Satonya Dews, Principal

We’re excited to share that we will celebrate Staff Appreciation Week starting Monday, May 6th. Our staff play an important role in shaping the minds and futures of our students!  Staff Appreciation Week presents a wonderful opportunity for us to express our gratitude and admiration for their hard work and continued commitment to excellence. Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

As we wrap up the month of April, we are thrilled to share some exciting updates and reminders from our school community!

We recently had the honor of hosting a film crew from the United States Department of Education (USDOE).  It was a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the incredible achievements, innovative programs, and nurturing environment that define our school. The film crew was able to capture footage of students and teachers working in the classroom in addition to interviewing several of our teachers. The USDOE plans to use the footage and pictures for a variety of promotional materials throughout the year on their website and social media pages. At the end of their visit, the team shared that they were very impressed by the collaborative efforts, academic achievements, and supportive culture that they witnessed during their time with us.  We want to give a very special "Thank You" to Celeste Rodriguez for organizing this visit.

We also wanted to share that our end-of-year assessments have begun.  As teachers work to complete these assessments, the information we gather will ensure that we capture the progress and achievements of each and every student. Your support in encouraging your child to do their best is invaluable during this time.

Don't forget to mark your calendars! Staff Appreciation Week is quickly approaching, running from May 6th to May 10th. It's a time to celebrate and honor the incredible dedication and hard work of our staff for going above and beyond to support our students every day. Let's make sure to show them how much we value their efforts!  In their most recent newsletter, the PTA has shared some wonderful suggestions for how students and their families can show our gratitude. Whether it's a heartfelt note, a small token of appreciation, or a simple gesture of thanks, every act of kindness goes a long way in brightening someone's day.

Lastly, we wanted to share a friendly reminder that school will be closed for students on May 3rd for a Teacher Work Day.

Thank you for your continued support of our school!  We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Check out our First Grade Museum Curators!

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

Happy Friday Everyone!  Our students were very busy this week. In Kindergarten students have continued to research for their Community Helpers PBL.  Stay tuned for their museum in May! They also welcomed some tiny visitors this week and added an ant farm to their classrooms to investigate life cycles. Our first grade students did an amazing job researching, designing and curating the first grade museum "Change Over Time" (pictured above). Thank you to everyone who came to support our Museum Night last night, we appreciate your support. Some of our second grade classes went on a field trip to Lincoln's Cottage this week and more classes will go next week. Second graders also continue to work on their persuasive skills, writing letters to convince their readers of their point of view.

As always thank you for your continued support of our school!  We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

We had another great week at Bailey’s!  We started the week by watching the solar eclipse.  It was an amazing experience for staff and students.  Thank you to the PTA for helping us purchase solar eclipse glasses for everyone!

Next week will be a busy one for our students!  In first grade, students will share the work they have done to create their museum:  Change Over Time. Our second graders will go on a field trip to Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington, D.C. while our kindergarten students will experience a visit from our local firefighters.  All students will also participate in the Body Safety Program.  The purpose of this program is to educate our students on personal safety and when to speak up.  As you can see there are lots of great things happening at Bailey’s ES!

The PTA is hosting a Gardening Day on Saturday.  If you have some time, consider joining the PTA as they work on cleaning up the garden in preparation for spring planting!  It looks like the weather will be great!

As always thank you for your continued support of our school!  We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Solar Eclipse Today!

A solar eclipse is happening today! It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Bailey’s ES, we have purchased approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.  We have planned for students and staff to watch the eclipse from 3:00 – 3:30 on the soccer field.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

I hope this message finds you well-rested and rejuvenated after a fantastic spring break! As students returned to school this week, we focused on re-establishing our classroom routines and setting goals for the remainder of the school year. Our teachers are committed to creating a supportive and enriching learning environment for every student as we begin the fourth quarter.

On Monday from 3:00 – 3:30, students will have the opportunity to watch the solar eclipse.  They have been learning about the eclipse during their STEAM Lab classes and are excited to see it.  For student and staff safety, we have purchased solar eclipse glasses for this event.  There is more information included below about how to safely view the eclipse.

Thank you for your continued support of our school.  We hope you have a great weekend.

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. You are being asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Thank you for your feedback!

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

This week seems to have flown by!  Who could have known how quickly March would come and go?

We want to remind you that Fairfax County Public Schools will be closed next week for Spring Break.  Whether you're taking a family trip or enjoying quiet days at home, we hope that Spring Break provides you with the chance to recharge and create lasting memories with family and friends.  Please remember that the Bailey’s ES office will be closed from March 25th - 29th.  Staff will be spending time with their families and will not be available to respond to emails, texts, or phone calls during Spring Break. They will return your message when school resumes on April 3rd.

As we look ahead to the 4th quarter, we are filled with excitement and optimism for all that is yet to come for the remainder of the school year.  Our students still have lots of learning to do and experiences to share.  By working together, we will continue to create a positive and inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive and reach their fullest potential.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!  We look forward to seeing everyone back at Bailey’s on April 3rd.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined by the CDC after resuming normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping to keep our students and staff healthy.

️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

A Note from Music

March is Music in our Schools Month!

When you think of elementary music class, do you think of singing, moving, and playing? Yes, that is what we do each day!  But, so much more happens than meets the eye.  Did you know…

1) We are working on social emotional skills as we use music as a vehicle to learn about self, others, and the world.

2)  We are learning about the world we live in, as music is an experience found across all cultures and countries.  Differences, similarities, and respect are recognized, practiced and celebrated throughout the year.

3) We sing together to learn about our past and present, learn from one another, and begin to envision a society where everybody is just as amazing and awesome as we are!

4) “Music instruction is affirming, meaningful, and relevant to students as they utilize the artistic process to learn about themselves and others, and develop critical perspectives of the world.” (Cuthbertson. 2022)

(Cuthbertson. 2022)

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! Everyday Counts

This year, Spring Break is March 25-April 2.  We are eager to welcome your children back in school on Wednesday, April 3.  Their attendance is very important.  Teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning.

Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind.  Let’s finish this school year strong.

According to a recent study of elementary and middle schools, there’s a 5.8% difference between April and June attendance rates.  In struggling schools, the attendance drop is nearly twice that.  Let's work together to end the school year with success.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

Warm weather greeted us this week reminding us that Spring is almost here!  It's a refreshing time of year, offering new opportunities for outdoor activities and a chance to rejuvenate after the winter months.  This week some of our students have been practicing their bike riding skills in PE and demonstrating their understanding of the relationship between the praying mantis and the monarch butterfly in the science lab while others have been learning about fractions and honing their writing skills. We have one week left before Spring Break.  Let’s make the most of the upcoming week by making sure students are at school every day to engage in all the learning that is taking place in their classrooms!

We wanted to remind you about Picture Day on March 20th.  Students will be taking a taking class picture.  We have included information below about preordering.  We can’t wait to see our students dressed in their very best on Wednesday!

We hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the warm weather this weekend with family and friends!  As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!  We’ll see you on Monday!

These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

A Note from Music

March is Music in our Schools Month!

Did You Know . . .

March is National ‘Music in our Schools Month.’  Many of you probably have fond memories of your elementary music class, and now it is an important part of your child’s education.

Studies have shown that “musical experience early in life imparts lifelong neuroplasticity."

What is neuroplasticity?  It is the brain's ability to modify, change, and adapt both structure and function throughout life and in response to experience.

Musical training can actually reshape and accelerate brain functions for the better!  These benefits have been found in all stages of life, and most strongly when a person engages in musical training early in life and continues that training in some form as a lifelong learner.

Sabías . . .

The Amazing Tracey Kyle in Action!

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

This week all of our students in preschool through second grade enjoyed a special assembly with author Tracey Kyle.  Mrs. Kyle is a retired FCPS Spanish teacher and she engaged our students by teaching them about alpacas and reading one of her bi-lingual books: "Alpaca Patti 's Fancy Fleece." Thank you to our PTA for your help in bringing this amazing experience to our school!

Please remember that Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!

Tonight we have the Bailey’s Basketball Game at Justice HS.  The doors open at 6:30 with the game starting at 7:00. We hope to see you there!

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!  Thank you for your continued support of our school!

A Note from Music  Why Music?

Music Is Purposeful!

Music  is the language of learning– it gives repetition, rhyme, patterns, and a variety of sounds, all of which are defining qualities of both music and early learning.  Like early literacy and math skills, music forges pathways in the brain for brain organization patterns, memory, recall, forecasting, concentration and listening.  The skills necessary to be a musician are the same skills of an FCPS Portrait of a Graduate student– Communicator, Collaborator, Ethnic & Global Citizen, Creative & Critical Thinker, Goal-Directed & Resilient Individual.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

We’ve had a busy week at Bailey’s. At the beginning of the week, the PTA kicked off our annual Read-A-Thon with a Story Extravaganza on Monday evening.  Our kindergarteners are gearing up for St. Patrick's Day as they leverage their STEAM skills by building leprechaun traps. Our first grade classes have been busy traveling to the Natural History Museum and hosting writing celebrations as they finished up their latest unit in writing.  Our second graders continue to build their skills with 2-digit addition and subtraction and began publishing their realistic fiction stories in writing. A great week was had by all!

Have a great weekend!  Thank you for your continued support of our school!

A Note from Music

March is Music in our Schools Month!

Your Bailey’s Music Teachers: Miss Amy Spiess-Ki and Mrs. Rebecca Winner

Did you know that March is National Music in our Schools Month?

Join us this month as we explore the impact music has on our minds, lives, and child’s education.

So, Why Music?

Music Is Natural!

The singing voice is natures built-in instrument– we all have one!  When children move to and create music it gives them a sense of rhythm and improves coordination and spatial-temporal reasoning.

 Music Is Joyful!

Singing is a joyful and sociable activity, feeding the spirit as well as the mind and bringing us closer together.  When a child’s experience is joyful their learning flourishes.  Music is an innate and natural love for children, and should be celebrated and explored at home as well as in school.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

This past week, we celebrated Valentine's Day and observed Kindness Week, fostering an atmosphere of love, compassion, and inclusivity among our students. It was heartwarming to see the acts of kindness and friendship displayed throughout our school. Throughout the week, our students have learned about fractions and addition and subtraction while in language arts they have continued to work on writing realistic fiction.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our school. Together, we are making a positive difference in the lives of our students. Please remember that school is closed on Monday for President’s Day.  We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, February 20th.  We hope you enjoy the long weekend!

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process.

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

I hope this message finds you well. As we reflect on another event filled week here at Bailey’s ES, I am excited to share some highlights from our recent activities.

Our kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school today.  It was a joyous occasion filled with laughter and a sense of accomplishment as we celebrated this milestone together. Our students' creativity and enthusiasm were truly remarkable, and I am immensely proud of their dedication to their education.

We also had the privilege of hosting participants from the Kennedy Center’s Changing Education Through the Arts conference, who visited our school to experience the magic of our arts integration program. Their visit provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible talent and innovation of our students and staff. I am grateful for the support and recognition of our commitment to arts education, and I am confident that these experiences will continue to inspire and enrich our school community.

Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that we will celebrate Kindness Week next week.  This initiative is a testament to our shared values of compassion, empathy, and inclusivity. Throughout the week, our students will participate in a Kindness Spirit week filled with  in various kindness-themed events and activities, that will encourage students to spread positivity and goodwill wherever they go.

As always, we want to express our appreciation for your ongoing support and involvement in our school community. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our students, and we are excited to see what we will accomplish in the weeks and months ahead.

This is a schoolwide and community celebration. At Bailey’s we will have a Spirit Week to celebrate kindness (paper copies were sent home on 2/1 and see the calendar below). Classrooms will have discussions on why kindness is important and how to show kindness to all (self, peers, adults, environment).

Lastly, as a family you can use the Kindness Idea Bank document to think about different ways to show kindness at home, school, and in the community (see below).

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

I hope this message finds you well and ready to embark on an exciting journey through the third quarter.  As we settle into the rhythm of the new quarter, we wanted to share a few highlights from the week:

In Kindergarten, students have begun writing personal narratives to build their writing skills. In the Science Lab, our first-grade students practiced the Portrait of a Graduate Communicator skills of listening to understand, asking questions when they don’t understand and speaking so others can understand them while they participated in a problem-solving task related to sports.  Lastly, our second-grade students continued to strengthen their numeracy skills as they prepare to learn about fractions.  Much of this learning will continue into next week.

Thank you for your continued partnership in shaping the future of our students!  We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Bailey’s ES Families,

On Monday we will begin the 3rd quarter of the school year.  We look forward to lots of new learning opportunities.  Teachers are finishing up midyear assessments while preparing to introduce new units in reading and math.  Although we’ve had lots of days off due to snow and the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, we are excited to return to coming to school every day.  Please remember that school starts at 9:00 a.m.  With so many missed days of school in January, it is important for students to be at school on time every day. As we enter this new quarter of the school year, I encourage you to maintain open communication with teachers, stay informed about your child's progress, and continue to be actively engaged in their educational journey.

We hope you enjoyed the warm weather today!  Have a safe and wonderful weekend!

Important information for Spanish Immersion Families

Starting January 29th, all Spanish Immersion students will be switching their homeroom class to their partner teacher to start their day for the remainder of the school year. This means, if they currently start their day with their language arts/social studies teacher, they will switch to start their day with their math/science teacher and vice versa.  This will ensure that students receive equal amounts of instructional time in language arts and math. Their lunch, recess and specials classes will remain exactly the same. Please check for direct communication from your child's teachers with specifics for their class.

Dual Language Immersion Program Registration

Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for the most current information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16

A virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Get more information on the immersion program webpage and registration page.

Magnet School Application and Lottery Information
